Twelve types of d-Con banned by 2015
Good news: “U.K.-based Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC, the maker of d-Con, struck a truce with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over a plan to ban sales of the rat poison, which has been linked to accidental exposures in children and wildlife.”
“In seeking to restrict the kinds of rodenticides used by consumers, the EPA had pointed to risks of secondary poisoning to eagles, foxes and other wildlife that ate the poisoned mice or rats. The agency had also asked manufacturers to package the poison pellets in traps or bait stations to prevent accidental exposure. Separately, the state of California this year banned d-Con sales to consumers starting in July.”
But read on, not GREAT news. “… The 12 types [of poisons used in d-Con] will still be available to licensed pest-control companies and to agricultural users, which means they will still be in the environment. An owl who eats a rat poisoned by a farmer or a pest-control company will die the same death as one poisoned by a homeowner.”
