Volunteer or Intern with us!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Walden’s Puddle. By volunteering with us, you have a chance to make a difference in the life of an animal and help the environment. Our goal is to return orphaned, ill, or injured wildlife to their natural habitat, and we couldn’t do that without our compassionate, dedicated, and hard-working long-term volunteers.

Most volunteer opportunities at Walden’s Puddle, which are described in more detail below, require hard work, patience, acceptance that you will get dirty, and the opportunity to work with wildlife you may have never seen in the wild or knew existed.

Some of the more interesting animals that have come through our doors include an albino raccoon, bald eagles, flying squirrels, various species of owls, and animals displaced by hurricanes, etc. If you don’t want to work with the animals directly, there are still much-needed and important volunteer opportunities listed below that do so much to help the wildlife in our care.

We are always in need of dedicated volunteers passionate about helping wildlife.

With the rapid growth and development of Nashville and its encroachment on outlying areas, Walden’s Puddle has seen the need for our services grow rapidly each year. On average, each year we will admit around 3,500 animals per year and that number seems to increase with each passing year.

Our greatest need is during our hectic Baby Season, which runs from about March until September, but we still care for wildlife year-round. Volunteering at Walden’s Puddle is fun, a lot of hard work, but rewarding!

The minimum age to volunteer is 16.

Wildlife Transport Team

Be the Bridge Between Rescue and Freedom

Every wildlife success story begins with a rescue—and ends with a return to the wild. As a Wildlife Transport Team volunteer at Waldens Puddle Wildlife Center, you’ll play a critical role in both of these life-changing moments.

Whether you’re safely transporting an injured or orphaned animal from a rescuer to our rehabilitation center or helping return a recovered patient to its natural habitat, your time behind the wheel makes wildlife rehabilitation possible.

For many animals, you may be the first person who helps them receive lifesaving care—or the last person to witness their incredible journey home.

What You’ll Do
As a Wildlife Transport volunteer, you’ll help connect wildlife with the care they need by:

  • Transporting injured, orphaned, or displaced wildlife from rescuers, veterinary clinics, or designated meeting locations to Waldens Puddle Wildlife Center
  • Returning rehabilitated animals to approved release sites where they can safely resume life in the wild
  • Safely securing and transporting wildlife according to established handling and transportation guidelines
  • Communicating with staff and volunteer coordinators regarding pick-up and delivery schedules
  • Maintaining a clean vehicle and transport carriers between trips
  • Completing basic transport documentation and following all safety and biosecurity protocols

VOLUNTEER WITH US!!

VOLUNTEER NOW

Intern

Want hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation? We’re now accepting applications for internships!

Interns are an essential part of our team – especially during baby season. You’ll gain hands-on experience with diet preparation, daily animal care and enrichment activities, enclosure cleaning, medication administration, and other aspects of wildlife rehabilitation. We have an incredible staff that’s ready to teach you the ins and outs of wildlife rehabilitation!

Before applying, here are a few important things to know:

  • This is an unpaid internship
  • We are located in Joelton, Tennessee
  • We work with wild animals. That means no cuddling, petting, or baby-talking any patients. Our goal is always to keep them wild so they can successfully return to their natural habitat.
  • Wildlife rehab is messy! Expect dirty, smelly animal care with infinite laundry and dishes to wash.
  • This is a physically demanding role. You’ll spend most of your shift on your feet, often working outdoor in the Tennessee heat while caring for the animals.
  • Rabies vaccination is not required for all animals care, but it is required for working with rabies vector species like raccoons, foxes, skunks, and coyotes.

If you’re passionate about wildlife, eager to learn, and ready to work hard, we’d love to hear from you!
